Not Enough Birds
© 2008 Larry Krone
We went out to the country
To get away from home
To spend some time together
And spend some time alone
It’s the birds in the country
That make my soul feel new
We saw some birds that weekend
But way too few
We heard a crow crowing
Woodpecker pecking
We saw a robin nesting in a tree
We even saw an eagle soaring in the sky
But that wasn’t enough birds for me
Flying, singing, being beautiful
And bringing a feeling that I need
Breathing, not needing, living outside my life
There weren’t enough birds for me
I’m not saying all was lost
We still enjoyed our time
Between us we never lacked for words
But I couldn’t help but feel let down
When I left not feeling changed
I only had but one complaint–not enough birds
Flying, singing, being beautiful
And bringing a feeling that I need
Breathing, not needing, living outside my life
There weren’t enough birds for me
Flying, singing, being beautiful
There’s never enough birds for me
