Going smoking
Out on the sidewalk
Can be the best way to catch your breath
A long day working
Your back is hurting
Let’s all break now for a cigarette
We are young men
In the prime of our youth
Working shit jobs but we don’t care
People pay us
To haul and hang stuff
They look right through us like we’re not there
We’re stuck together
This crew of workers
We’re with each other though we’re not friends
But every hour
We claim the power
To go outside and leave the site to smoke again
I can’t tell you
How many Cokes I’ve drank
And we’re not even near mid-day
We’re all joking
Till we can be smoking
Not for the nicotine, just for the break
These guys are with me
But they don’t get me
We smoke together and shoot the shit
I’m in the closet
But one of them’s onto it
Now he’s suggesting I suck his dick
These guys are monsters
Or maybe they’re not
It doesn’t matter I need the pay
I just keep working
And I keep smoking
With these monsters ten times a day
(lost verse)
We go out smoking
While paint is drying
Escape the toxic in the fresh air
I learn the histories
Of the families
Of these guys just because we’re standing there
The day has ended
We worked 10 hours
But we’re not ready to go home
Once we lock up
Outside we light up
One more cigarette with these men I’ll never know
